Entries called for Western Roads Upgrade major public sculpture commission
McClelland is excited to announce the call out for proposals for the Western Roads Upgrade public art commission. Contemporary Australian artists – particularly those with a strong connection to the western suburbs through their work, life experience or background – are invited to develop an iconic and career-defining public artwork. This major work will be installed in early 2020 on the Princes Freeway in Werribee as part of the Western Roads Upgrade public-private partnership project. Applications close on 1 May 2019. McClelland is delighted to announce Jennifer Mills as the winner of the $30,000 Splash McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award for her densely layered and moving work, In the echo chamber (WARNING NUEAO, Brendan 1976-78) 2018 (above), judged by Linda Michael, independent curator and editor. Fiona McMonagle’s mesmerising animated video work, The park at the end of my road 2016 (below), was selected for the $10,000 highly commended work by Samantha Comte, Curator, The Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne.
Splash: McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award 2018

To be held every three years, the Splash McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award has been established to showcase contemporary Australian watercolour practice. It is an acquisitive award enabled by the Fornari Bequest, by the Will of the late Lena May Fornari, and is a legacy of her support of the arts in Victoria. Lena May was an ardent collector of watercolours and the first acquisitions through this Bequest were significant watercolour paintings. Continuing this tradition, Splash presents the work of contemporary Australian artists who use this medium in highly accomplished and innovative ways:
